As the Thai New Year Festival or 'Songkran' is approaching, it's another occassion to celebrate. However, we urge our fellow members to drink responsibly during this auspicious occassion. Here's a few tips on how much to call a healthy alcoholic drink.
We all know about the consequences of drinking too much alcohol so well that it’s dangerous to our body especially to liver and brain this include accidents that might occurred because of it. It is very important to consider if you have any health problems or diseases and what kind of drinks you want to have such as wine, whisky, or beer.
People who have disease should not drink alcohol at all. For those who have to take medicine should not drink due to the reaction between alcohol and medicine will cause unfavorable or bad effect as we have known from the news that someone died because of drinking alcohol with sleeping pill or some found Hepatitis from drinking alcohol with antibiotics.
For some who don’t have any health problems may allow to drink a bit per day. From several researches in the past decade said that if drinking at specific amount, it will help decrease LDL – Cholesterol (Bad type). LDL is the fat that causes blood vessels occlusion.
After all, there is a standard drink to determine the amount of drinking each type of alcohol as follows; Types of Alcoholic Beverage
- Whisky or 40 degrees spirits alcohol = 43 cc. or 1.5 oz.
- Beer (5% alcohol)* = 341 cc. or 12 oz. (small can)
- Table wine (8-12% alcohol) = 142 cc. or 5 oz.
- Fortified wine or Port wine (18% alcohol) = 85 cc. or 3 oz.
* Beer in Thailand is stronger than indicated above (about 6-10%) Therefore, one standard drink will be less than one can.
Males should not have more than two standard drinks while females should not have more than one standard drink. Both male and female should not drink more than 3-4 times a week or everyday and it should be sipping during a big meal.
However, I still think that “No Alcohol” always the best because when you start drinking, it automatically decrease the ability of self-controlled and difficult to limit your alcohol consumption and one important thing, DO NOT forget, if you drive any kinds of vehicle, you must not drink as a great responsibility for your own life and society.
